Insurance FAQ's

Do you take insurance?

No, I do not. I know this can be disappointment, so please allow me to explain the why behind this.

The reason I do not work with insurance panels is because insurance requires treatment to follow a medical model—one with a distinct beginning, middle, and end which doesn’t allow for the nuance and humanness I believe is required for mental health treatment. Insurance also requires a diagnosis, creating a gap for folks who would benefit from therapy but don’t meet the criteria for “medical necessity.” Private pay therapy allows us to step outside the ethical messiness of insurance companies—no surprise bills, no catches, and much more honesty and openness from all involved.

In addition to all of this, not requiring a diagnosis means I will never pathologize a normal human experience. In other words, I won't call something a disorder or a problem when it is a normal and understandable human response to a given situation. For example, it is a normal experience to feel anxiety and doubt during a faith transition, and I will not label that natural anxiety as a disorder. While there is of course room for genuine diagnoses to be given, that is something we will discuss and collaborate on together over time.

Are there any benefits to private pay therapy?

Yes! As a private pay client you will never be given a diagnosis or label that does not fit simply for the sake of having a diagnosis. Insurances require a diagnosis to provide any coverage, often leading to premature or incorrect diagnosing. Private pay therapy also removes some of the strict requirements insurance has for length of treatment and session structure. Some insurances will only pay for what is called brief therapy (around 6-10 sessions), and beyond this will not offer coverage. Avoiding this is a huge benefit to private pay therapy, as you will never get blindsided with a change in expected cost. All of this gives you as the client a great deal more control over your own therapy, allowing you to focus more on what you need and hope to get out of therapy, rather than what your insurance requires.

What is a superbill, and do you offer them?

Superbills are documents which provide the detailed charges from therapy, allowing you to personally work with your insurance for potential reimbursement. I can provide superbills, however please know that insurance reimbursement does require a diagnosis and is never a guarantee.

Do you have a sliding scale fee?

I have a limited number of sliding scale spaces. If you are in need of sliding scale, please do not hesitate to bring it up and we can explore your unique financial situation during the consultation.
